I. 441 to 458

Aeneid I. 441-458
441 Lucus in urbe fuit media, laetissimus umbra,
There was a grove in the middle of the city, most productive of shade,
442 quo primum iactati undis et turbine Poeni
in which place first the Phoenicians tossed by waves and whirlwind
443 effodere loco signum, quod regia Iuno
dug out a sign, which royal Juno
444 monstrarat, caput acris equi; sic nam fore bello
had pointed out, the head of a fierce horse; for thus the race would be
445 egregiam et facilem victu per saecula gentem.
distinguished in war and easy in living through the ages.
446 Hic templum Iunoni ingens Sidonia Dido
Here Sidonian Dido was building a huge temple,
447 condebat, donis opulentum et numine divae,
wealthy in gifts and the divine power of the goddess,
448 aerea cui gradibus surgebant limina, nexaeque
on the steps to (of) which were rising bonze threshholds and
449 aere trabes, foribus cardo stridebat aenis.
beams fastened with bronze, and the hinge grated on the bronze doors.
450 Hoc primum in luco nova res oblata timorem
For the first time the new thing presented in this grove soothed [his] fear,
451 leniit, hic primum Aeneas sperare salutem
here for the first time Aeneas dared to hope for safety
452 ausus, et adflictis melius confidere rebus.
and to trust better in the shattered things.
453 Namque sub ingenti lustrat dum singula templo,
For while he surveys separate things under [the eaves of] the huge temple,
454 reginam opperiens, dum, quae fortuna sit urbi,
waiting for the queen, while he marvels at what the fate to [of] the city is,
455 artificumque manus inter se operumque laborem
and at the hands of the artists [competing] among themselves and at the toil of
the deeds,
456 miratur, videt Iliacas ex ordine pugnas,
he sees the Trojan battles in order,
457 bellaque iam fama totum vulgata per orbem,
and the wars already made known by rumor through the whole globe,
458 Atridas, Priamumque, et saevum ambobus Achillem.
and the sons of Atreus, and Priam, and Achilles cruel to both.
