Character essay

Here's a link to some Free Response questions that you can access through the College Board website: Click Here.

For the character essay, last year's question was this:

The Aeneid focuses our attention on the sufferings of the Trojan wanderers. Choose one episode from Group A and one episode from Group B. In a short essay, discuss how each episode contributes to understanding the sufferings of the Trojans. Be sure to support your essay with specific details.

Group A
The Strophades and the Harpies

The women setting fire to the ships

Ascanius and the stag

Group B

The shield of Aeneas

Turnus in the Trojan camp

The death of Pallas

Of course, not all of these episodes are from Books I and II (in fact, usually the question focuses on the books we haven't translated, and mostly the second half of the Aeneid). However, this should give you an idea of what types of questions are asked for the final Free Response question. More often, it's characters rather than episodes that you're asked to analyze.
