II. 1-20

Conticuēre omnēs intentīque ōra tenēbant.

All became silent and were holding [their] faces eagerly [on Aeneas].

inde torō pater Aenēās sīc ōrsus ab altō:

Then father Aeneas began thus from the high couch:

“Infandum, rēgīna, iubēs renovāre dolōrem,
framing

Queen, you order [me] to revive unspeakable grief,

Trōiānās ut opēs et lāmentābile rēgnum
ind. question

how the Danaans [Greeks] overthrew the Trojan powers and the lamentable kingdom,

ēruerint Danaī, quaeque ipse miserrima vīdī


and what very miserable things I saw myself

et quōrum pars magna fuī. quis tālia fandō


and of which I was a great part. What soldier of the Myrmidons or of the Dolopes

Myrmidonum Dolopumve aut durī mīles Ūlixī


or of harsh Ulysses would restrain from tears

temperet ā lacrimīs? Et iam nox ūmida caelō


in speaking such things? And now the damp night falls from the sky

praecipitat suādentque cadentia sīdera somnōs.


and the falling stars urge on sleep.

Sed sī tantus amor cāsūs cognōscere nostrōs


But if [your] desire [is] so great to know our misfortunes

et breviter Trōiae suprēmum audīre labōrem,


and to hear briefly the final work of Troy,

quamquam animus meminisse horret lūctūque refūgit,


although [my] spirit trembles to have recalled [it] and flees from sorrow, I will begin.

incipiam. “Frāctī bellō fātīsque repulsī,

“ Broken by war and driven by the fates,

ductōrēs Danaum tot iam lābentibus annīs


the leaders of the Greeks, with so many years then gliding by,

īnstar montis equum dīvīnā Palladis arte
hyperbole

build a horse, the image of a mountain, with the divine skill of Pallas [Minerva/Athena],

aedificant, sectāque intexunt abiete costās;


and they weave the sides with the cut pine;

vōtum prō reditū simulant; ea fāma vagātur.


they pretend [that it is] a offering for [their] return [home]; this rumor spreads abroad.

Hūc dēlēcta virum sortītī corpora fūrtim


Here they, having chosen by lot, secretly enclose the chosen bodies of men
19
inclūdunt caecō laterī penitusque cavernās


in the dark side and they completely fill the huge caverns
20
ingentēs uterumque armātō mīlite complent.


and the belly with armed military.
